Who can resist the pull factor of these floral decorations? Not anyone walking past that’s for sure. The blooming curb appeal has all passersby’s attention. Many photos have been taken. And it’s only the first day of Chelsea in Bloom.

Running from 23-28 May, Chelsea in Bloom is an alternative floral art show in the heartland of the Chelsea Flower Show. How great to be able to walk around for free checking out retailers, restaurants and hotels adorning themselves with creative designs. This is an actual contest so competition is intense. 2022’s theme is ‘British Icons’ and draws inspiration from the characters, symbols and emblems across the United Kingdom in preparation for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee taking place next week.

The creativity is rather amazing, the decor that can be achieved with blooms (fake and real) and other somewhat unexpected accessories. My route this grey Monday started at Pimlico Road continued up Lower Sloane Street and along King’s Road. I had to stop regularly to take a closer look (and photographing) the art installations. The ones seen here are only a few of those on show.

The displays will be judged by an expert panel, with the winners being announced on Wednesday 25 May. I don’t envy the panel members, picking a winner must be extremely difficult. If I was to pick a favourite, however, of those I saw today, my vote would go to the decor outside The Ivy on King’s Road. The creators here have really gone all in – well done to yous!
