Monumento a Picasso

Jardines de Picasso is situated on the western side of Málaga city. To celebrate the famous painter and local homeboy Pablo Picasso (born in 1881) the park was put in place to commemorate his 90th birthday. An ornament was deemed necessary and the local authority commissioned another famous local art person, Miguel Ortiz Berrocal to design a sculpture. The result was the ‘Monumento a Picasso’ – in my view a Málaga public art gem.

Monumento a Picasso in Jardines de Picasso, Málaga – sculpture by M Ortiz Berrocal – 1971.

Completed in 1971 the bronze sculpture shows an entangled couple and has a very Picasso surrealistic vibe if you ask me. Inspiration, however, seems to have come from the gigantic trunk of a nearby Ficus tree. Due to various political obstacles the sculpture was not put in its current location until 1976: It has only been removed once since then. If in the neighbourhood, don’t miss out on this fine piece of abstract art.
