European wild ginger as it’s also known has become increasingly used in recent years. I’ve spotted it in botanical gardens as well as housing estates. It’s off to a slow start, which means that weeding might required before it’s fully established as effective ground cover. This plant likes sheltered shade. Second best will be partial shade. It prefers moist, but well-drained, humus-rich soil which may be neutral or acid. In addition to being used as ground cover it’s useful as underplanting, for example around roses and shrubs. I reckon it has a modern appearance suitable for contemporary, sleek gardens. The blooms appear in spring and are initially green then turning purple. Unfortunately, they are difficult to spot as they grow underneath the leaves … It requires little pruning and is as such low maintenance.
