Plant of the week – Pyrostegia venusta

Plant of the weekPyrostegia venusta is so hot it might set your garden space on fire. Not literally, more metaphorically, the spectacular orange colour temperature has given it the nickname flamevine. It really is unbelievable what a show-stopper this climber is. Even more so since it’s rocking its flamboyance in the middle of the winter. You may stand utterly overwhelmed if you are lucky enough to find yourself in the right clime at the right time. Which I did, this late December 2022. In Málaga, southern Spain.

The origins of flamevine is South America. It only likes warm climates, northern European gardens need not apply. Where warm, however, it flourishes. It’s a vigorous climber reaching 8-10 m in 2-5 years. Your garden will be on fire in no time (see below)! As it’s evergreen with glossy green leaves it will be decorative even at other times of the year.

Pyrostegia venusta prefers full sun, a sheltered position and sandy loam soil, moist but well-drained. It requires thorough watering during the first summer and autumn after planting as well as during dry periods. To keep them blooms coming, prune this vine back sharply after annual flowering to keep it tamed, as well as to promote heavy flowering the following year.
