The design of a new café

Took a stroll in the city centre of Gothenburg and rather unexpectedly came across an “exhibition” showcasing proposals for the design of a new café. A central green space had historically had one, but it was deployed years ago. Now it seems, the council wanted one back. How come I hadn’t heard of this I’m not sure. Anyway, behind my back so to speak, there had been a competition going on. Calling all architects to forward their proposals for the design of a new café no larger than 25sqm (plus some available outside space). Who would have thought there could be so many designs ideas? Around 115 were submitted, it was rather fascinating walking around checking out all the models on display.

I asked staff who will decide on a winner – was it perhaps the local authority? Got the reply that a jury will nominate a winner on 15th December. Less than a week away – all rather exciting. In my mind, however, I was also thinking about the input of city residents, wouldn’t it have been nice to consult them as well? Doesn’t seem like it.

Above and below are photos of some of proposals for the new café. Can’t be an easy decision for the jury, they all have their merits. I have my own shortlist, now I will have to contemplate my own personal winner. Check out the exhibition catalogue for a full lowdown. I find the designs very inspirational, a construction comprising 25sqm is something that could fit into the average garden ….
